I wrote most of the pages about map making in the sequence this page is part of back before December 1999. Last millenium!
I had not worked up a more realistic example by 2013, when I wrote about the same topic again, from a slightly different perspective... and with a lot more experience of writing web pages!
In that 2013 opus, there is a somewhat realistic example, complete with data for you to try making a map from. Enjoy! There are links in that page to bring you back here when you are done. There is some discussion there about a programming challenge, but you can just ignore all of that, if it doesn't interest you. Before long you get to what you went there for.
This page's editor, Tom Boyd, will be pleased if you get in touch by email.
Page tested for compliance with INDUSTRY (not MS-only) standards, using the free, publicly accessible validator at validator.w3.org. Mostly passes. There were two "unknown attributes" in Google+ button code, and three in the Flattr. Sigh.
